relatives of young sean johnson has spent the day at the hospital. and they're making tough decisions about his medical care. >> this is the most sense little, insane criminal act of violence. >> dr. camille bell is fed up. one of the principal's star students is clinging to life. >> it's heartwrenching. >> 12-year-old sean johnson is shot in the chest just a few blocks away on clifton avenue. >> i'm never going to be at peace with this ever. >> he was one of four young people hit in a spray of bullets. >> and if we sit back in fear and say nothing, in essence, what we're saying is, it's okay to do this. kill some more of our kids. it's not okay anymore. >> so far, police have made no arrests.

>> principal bell led crisis teams to the school he's visited since 5 and visited him at the hospital. >> he's always been the type of students that if i could clone 800 times, we would clone him 800 times. i did not go into education to bury children. >> she says this outrageous violence should be a call to action. >> if we have to bury a child like that, because somebody else has no conscience, at some point, we as a community need to say, we have a conscience, and we are not going to stand for this anymore. >> reporter: and three stiewbtsds -- students in baltimore city schools have been shot just this month. police right now, vic, are pleading for people to come forward and help them solve this case. back to you. >> mike, thank you. students are holding a tribute to johnson at the school tonight. a baltimore county neighborhood on lockdown for several hours today, as police try to coax an armed man out of

a house. mary is in the newsroom with more. mary? >> denise, baltimore county police say it all started when they tried to serve a warrant in parkville. officers went to a home to serve a warrant for second- degree assault. that's when police say the man inside ran to his bedroom and grabbed a gun. police say the man did fire at least one shot, but no one was injured. and he eventually surrendered. denise? >> perring parkway was shut down between oakley and taylor avenue during the barricade. but it has since reopened. what started as a child pornography case turned into more tonight. wjz is live. >> not only did police find on this man's computer, child pornography. but they always -- also realized they they -- that they had been looking at graphic and disturbing videos. a man with developmental disability.

>> reporter: 56-year-old tony chestnut, arrested for sexually abusing a developmentally disabled adult male. the proof, police say, was found on computer video files seized from a home he shares with his wife and daughter. >> devastating. i can't believe it. i know that man. we're next door neighbors. >> reporter: community leaders are stunned to learn about the charges because chestnut's own daughter is severely disabled. deputies have learned the abuse took place at this catholic charity group home. >> he had access. and right now, it looks like he had been committing thursday offenses for quite sometime. >> reporter: for their part, catholic charities said they were made aware of the situation by police since wednesday, but says chestnut has been suss pended, pending the outcome of a hearing. >> i'm shocked, really shocked. ooze. >> reporter: -- >> reporter: it's all disturbing to chestnut's

neighbors. >> i cannot believe what i'm hearing. and i still believe that you're innocent until proven guilty. and i'm just waiting to hear the outcome. and prayers are going up in all directions. i feel for his family. his wife and his child. >> reporter: the victim in this case is a man with such severe developmental disabilities that he's not even able to speak. and according to court-charging documents, chestnut confessed to police, that's the whole reason why he chose that victim. back to you. >> in all, chestnut faces 10 criminal charges, including multiple counts of sexual abuse and child pornography. an investigation is under way at this hour into a two- alarm fire in baltimore. this video is just there on west bitsz street. west bitdz street. -- bitdz street.

a police officer at the scene suffered minor smoke inhalation. no rest for storm-weary residents across the u.s. in hard-hit, joplin, missouri, the recovery is going to take years. >> reporter: donations are pouring in to joplin, missouri. >> here we have baby food, diapers. food for adults. >> reporter: volunteers are handing out food and supplies to the thousands who lost everything, when the monster tornado hit. >> it's wonderful. everybody is coming together and feeding people. and it's just fantastic. >> puts a smile on your face, huh? >> yes, it does. yes. >> reporter: crews are all around town, fixing power lines and downed attach poles -- telephone poles. joplin is slowly trying to bring back some normalcy. >> just straight down there in the corner. that's where we were at. >> reporter: tommy junkins and his wife cindy, hid in the basement, while the twister

flattened their two-story home. they say they're emotional, but they're ready to start over. >> at this location, i'm ready to start now. we've picked through, seen what's here. anything worth anything, we've pulled out and i'm just ready to have it gone. >> more than 120 were killed in joplin. and state officials now say around 230 people are still missing. >> i'm surprised there's not more than that, to be honest with you, sir. i'm surprised. >> reporter: it's been a difficult week for thousands in the midwest. in at least six states, residents are picking up the pieces after deadly tornadoes and powerful storms carved a path of destruction. forecasters say the most severe weather has passed. but tornado season isn't over yet. in joplin, missouri, joel brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> president obama plans to tour the devastation on sunday. well, some storms across part of maryland. a live look outside right now. it is a hot, humid evening. perfect conditions for storms. we're live with first warning weather coverage.

meteorologist tim williams and bernadette are at camden yards with more on our fourth annual weather day. but first, bob is tracking live doppler radar. >> it was a hot, humid day down to the yard. but no rain in the baltimore region. it's all out to the west. a lot of reports of hail in west virginia. still 90 degrees. all of the activity continues around the cumberland area, over to hancock, to the northwest of hagerstown. some big storms there. we had your little orleans and berkeley springs. reports of softball-sized hail and a couple of spots out there. believe it or not. all of that activity continues to the north and northeast. severe thunderstorm warnings continue until 6:45 tonight. here east of that region, just hazy, humid conditions. looks like tomorrow afternoon. that's when we'll probably see some thunderstorms across the baltimore, washington and annapolis area. now, let's go down to camden yards where tim and bern have been down there all day long,

doing a yoman's job. take it away. >> we have been having a good time, since the early morning to now. the sun has been out. it's really warmed things up. but we've had a chance to celebrate the fourth annual weather field trip day, with all of our friends down here at camden yards. >> that's right. here's a bit of a look at when we have been doing all day, since about 6:00 a.m. this morning. ♪ [ music ] >> what is today here at camden yards? >> weather day? >> develop the weather. >> basically, we're coming here to learn about the weather and also watch the orioles play. >> reporter: today, more than 7,000 kids, teachers and parents, came to oriole park at camden yards for the fourth annual wjz masn and baltimore orioles weather field trip day. >> what this does is cement the relationship between the orioles, masn, wjz and the community. it's a fun time for everybody. and it's a learning experience. >> how are you doing? >> reporter: the wjz first warning weather team presented valuable lessons to student negligence clouds and the jet stream.

>> because the way the jet stream moves is like the way the wave moves around a stadium. >> nice job! >> reporter: friends from the national weather service demonstrated how data is collected from the sky. >> and there it goes. >> reporter: and in a somewhat hair-raising situation, the maryland science center showed how electricity works in the box. >> there it is. look at her hair. >> the storm is a wall of water that is created. >> reporter: valuable safety lessons learned. >> turn around. >> don't drown. >> all right. and when thunder roars -- >> go indoors. >> thank you so much, everybody. >> because that's the end ♪ >> yeah. we had cartoons, hot dog races, all kinds of entertainment out here. >> not a bad way to spend the day out here. and for all of you students and teachers out there who didn't get to participate, what you can do is block it in for income spring. we don't have the schedule yet.

>> we were all set to make fun of her, but i can't even say she throws like a girl. bernadette got to throw out the first pitch. how did it feel? >> i was really scared. i was nervous. you only get one shot when you go out there. but it was an honor. thanks to the orioles so much for letting us have the opportunity to do this. >> yeah. >> it was really fun. >> she dropped it right in, belt level, perfect strike. took a little while to get there. >> i had a huge thing, i was nervous about getting it into the dirt. >> but she did a good job. i think they're going to put her in the bull pen. we had a good time, guys. and hopefully next year will be even bigger. each year has grown. this year, more than 7,000 kids getting closer to 8,000. and next year, we're hoping for about 10. >> we would love that. again, we will be having this next year. come out and join us.

hunter died in pursuit of a motorcycle, on southbound i-95 saturday. >> we struck the rear of a stuck tractor-trailer. >> reporter: now, troopers from across the state pay their final respects at a viewing in randallstown. >> it's never easy when you lose one of your own. especially in this way, it's a young trooper who is out there, just doing a great job. >> reporter: neighbors call the trooper humble, always going out of his way for others. >> when you see someone in authority around, you feel a lot more comfortable. and not just that, to know that they're a friendly person and they were down to earth. and he had an awesome sense of humor. >> he was a beautiful, beautiful person. kind. compassionate. a people person. a devoted father. >> reporter: the 39-year-old state trooper leaves behind a wife and six children, ages 4 to 19.

>> they're all very upset. i think it's still a shock to them, what happened. but they'll get through it. i think that mrs. hunter is a very strong woman. and she'll make sure they do. >> reporter: and the search continues tonight for that motorcyclist that we've learned never stopped when the trooper was killed. live in randallstown, i'm jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right. thank you, jessica. a scholarship fund has been established for jessica. you can make donations to m&t bank. the blue angels will not perform the annual graduation flyover at the u.s. naval academy graduation. they are under review following an event in which the planes were too close to the ground. another plane will do a flyover at the graduation tomorrow. a plan to pump oxygen into a small portion of the inner harbor holds the promise of

improving water quality. the experiment is part of the quest for healthier waterways. >> reporter: starving for air. fish in the inner harbor float belly up for lack of oxygen in may 2009. sky eye chopper 13 flies over the mass of it. but people in downtown baltimore don't need to see a fish kill to know something is wrong. >> it smelt like fish food. or like an aquarium center or some place like that. >> ive live about three blocks from the park. you can smell it from there. when you open the windows, you want to close the windows. >> reporter: today, the air is fresher, with wildlife people enjoying the water. >> they went swimming? >> i went swimming. >> and you fed them bread? >> bread. >> reporter: and what else? how many were there? >> two. >> reporter: but summer temperatures can have a disastrous effect. that's why environmentalists and engineers have teamed up to study ways to get more oxygen into these troubled waters. >> we're going to be blowing bubbles in the water, exactly. little tiny bubbles. and in addition, just the

mixing of the lower water to the surface. will improve oxygen. >> reporter: it's a small experimental effort. but they might think it's worth it. >> i do. have you seen this water? do you see how dirty this water is? so they do need it? >> can't hurt to try, huh? >> better than can't hurt. it could help provide a cure. >> the patient is lying on the floor, gasping for oxygen. give them oxygen. and that's kind of the idea here. >> reporter: and this may lead to a better understanding of what's needed, as well as what's a waste of time. reporting live, i'm pat warren. back to you on tv hill. blue water baltimore is the project in the project. >> felt like summer today. >> we'll have to give you some fresh oxygen out there. 91 degrees. the hottest day since last september. and we have more of this heat coming. 94 degrees still. the dew point has dropped a

here's a live look outside right now. hey. look at that. water skiing already. >> that's a way to put oxygen in the water. >> that is probably close to services. that would be pretty cool out there. all right. we have storms still ongoing across western maryland. washington, and allegheny county. and all of the neighboring counties in southern pa and western virginia as well. lots of reports of hail out there. we saw that strong storm out there just a little while ago. and they were it happened warnings. so far, no reports of actual tornado touchdowns. but tree damage and lots of hail. one-inch hail. even one spot picked up two and three quarter inch hail, reported with one of. >> cells over portions of western washington and eastern allegheny county. that is huge. it's all out to the west of the

state. but no shower activity. take a look at temperatures around the region now. well, we're still at 90 here. out to the west. showers, 86. 76 in oakland. 64. they had heavy rain there in cumberland. 80s to the south. upper 80s. ocean city now at 82. the dew point has come down just a bit. but it's still a very sticky night. 84, kent island. and over at annapolis. still 90 and columbia and bel air. southerly, southeasterly winds. time of high tide later tonight and tomorrow morning. on the western side of the bay, the tides may run one foot above normal. and that's why you see that severe thunderstorm watches and warnings out to the west of us. and they still have a tornado warning for some of those counties. western opportunities. now, here in the east. you see this. just to the west, that's where

we're seeing the showers and storms. most of them over ohio. we've had severe weather out there. although no storms there. rest of the night in the baltimore region should be quiet. but all weekend long. warm summer like continues. this will be a breezy. it will be a warm, breezy. tonight, then, any showers west. 64. about 70 in the city. a few strong storms possible again late in the afternoon. it's going to be a warm weekend. water temperature in the mid- 60s. a little chilly pop-up shower. >> but still, you're at the beach. >> not bad at all. a towson university school

student gets an unexpected graduation present. her parents return from a war zone to celebrate her special day. weijia jiang has more on the happy reunion. marking a milestone is not always easy. >> senior year should have been one of the best years of my life. but it's been challenging so far. >> challenging for brandy gervais, because she went through her senior year alone. her parents, both army officers, were both in iraq. >> i was always under the impression that they wouldn't make it back for my graduation. which is a complete bummer, and i think that added to my stress this year. >> yet she somehow made it through with a 4.0 grade point average. she was all-american. >> i spot them right when i was walking in. i spotted them.

>> reporter: the gervaises traveled 8,000 miles. they surprised brandi earlier in the week. >> i was so proud to see her in her cap and gown. and to see that she's accomplished so much. i'm just so proud. >> actually, to open up her heart and explain and give a little piece of herself instead of just kind of the rote, you know, hey, congratulations, it was tough. >> reporter: gervais said she is proud, too. and she'll remember this moment for a lifetime. >> the reason why i accomplished so much is because of them. i would not be the person i am today without them. so i'm incredibly proud. >> reporter: weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> from here, gervais will do a one-year dental internship with the u.s. army, of course, then it's off to dental school. >> it's in her blood. and congratulations to her and her family. that is great. still ahead on wjz eyewitness news. experience survivor. can you outwit, outplay, and outlast them all?

it is just before 6:30. 90 degrees and humid. good evening, everyone. and thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. one of the world's most wanted men is in just custody. intelligence agents caught up with ratko mladic. he is accused of killing thousands of boys in 1995. >> rad co mladic, once a

powerful serbian general wore a baseball cap and black pants. agents found him in a tiny serbian village. officials say he didn't resist arrest. mladic had been on the run for 16 years. the 69-year-old ate at local restaurants and attended soccer games, which led many to believe that he was sheltered pie loyalists -- by loyalists. but they never gave up. >> we have always believed in our strategy and the method involved in this process. >> reporter: mladic is accused in the bosnian war with serbia. he handed candy to children and promised their safety, only hours before serbian troops killed 8,000 muslim men and boys. a united nations council charged him on several charges, include war crimes. >> reporter: in a statement,

mladic said he now has to answer to his victims in a court of law. >> reporter: international justice works. if you commit a crime, you won't escape judgment. you will not go free. >> reporter: former bosnian serb leader, ra tivan, released a statement, saying he is sorry for his colleagues' behavior. >> reporter: in washington, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> mladic will be back in court for more questioning tomorrow. from the jail cell to the penthouse. the former head of the imf is now under a luxurious house arrest. >> reporter: well, denise, dominique strauss-kahn is now living in an upscale manhattan apartment. that's where he will remain under house arrest as he awaits trial for rape of a hotel maid.

despite this, strauss-kahn is a prisoner, his every movement monitored electronically. he will be allowed out for court, doctors visits and religious services, but he must notify the court every time he leaves. >> strauss-kahn is accused of assaulting a hotel maid in manhattan earlier this month. some of us don't do it. but this holiday weekend. driving off without first buckling up is a priority. alex demetrick reports, you can bring home an unwanted souvenir. >> plenty of ways to get written up. but a ticket for not wearing a seat belt. >> we're only shocked by the simple safety apparatus is not used on a routine basis. >> reporter: putting out media warnings is becoming a summer routine. this year's has special effect. >> if you don't buckle up, you will get stuck with a ticket. click it or ticket. >> reporter: college students have also been hired for a less high-tech approach.

papered with tickets, they're paid to stand in public places. >> people are curious. we basically have them wear the seat belt. >> amazingly, some 45 million americans, 15% of us, still won't buckle up. young people especially young men are at risk. >> reporter: the highest unbelted fatality rates are ages 21 to 34. 62% of those deaths come in nighttime accidents. 44% happen during daylight hours. annually, more than 3600 lives could have been saved if seat belts had been worn. >> wearing your seat belt costs nothing. not wearing one costs everything. >> reporter: in most states, you have to be pulled over for something before getting a ticket. but not in maryland. >> today, in the state of maryland, not wearing a safety belt is a primary offense. meaning the officer can stop you, based upon that observation alone. >> reporter: at nationwide, 10,000 departments will be

bull pen today. the o's start a road trip against the a's in oakland tomorrow night. across the bay from the a's, the san francisco giants are dealt a devastating injury. catcher buster posey, done for the year after he suffered a broken bone in his lower left leg. posey's legs got twisted beneath him, when cousins plowed into him. scoring the extra innings. posey was the national league's rookie of the year, in helping the giants win the world series last year. it's the end of an era in football. matt stover was the last remaining active player who was a member of the cleveland browns team here. stover officially ended his playing career today. he was seated with odzy newsome, and gm. he announced his going out as one of the best kickers ever. they'll remain based in baltimore, after 13 years here.
